On behalf of Rotary International President Barry, I welcome you to the 2018-19 Rotary Year with the theme “Be the Inspiration” it is my honor to be your Governor this year. I will make this promise, that I will do my best to live up to your expectations and Be the Inspiration to all of you, my fellow Rotarians…and together may we be the Inspiration to our communities and collectively to the
As we begin this new Rotary year, it is important to be reminded, of Rotary’s, of our vision statement.Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change-across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves In Rotary, we unite because we know that we are far stronger together than we could be alone. We take action, because we are not dreamers in Rotary-but doers. We work to create lasting change-change for the good, change that will endure long after our involvement has ended.
Change across the globe, and in our communities… reaching out to those we will never meet, and those closest to our hearts. And change in ourselves…perhaps most important of all. Take a moment, reflect on that last statement.
I have. As I look back over the past 27 years Rotary has been slowly changing me, but the opportunity you have given me to be your governor and the resulting things I have learned, experienced and seen have had a profound and lasting change on my life the way I see things.
Rotary has changed me. Many of you know, my own wife suffers from Alzheimer’s, now in an advanced stage. I am her care giver. Many of you have said, “don’t know how you do it?” I am not sure I could have done what I am doing today, if it were not for Rotary in my life. As Rotarians, we are compassionate people, we do what is needed. We get the job done. You would do the same thing if the situation presented itself. Hopefully it nev-er will. Rotary’s accomplishments both locally and glob-ally are truly an inspiration but many often go untold not only to the world, but even to most Rotarians. Story telling is one of the most effec-tive ways of conveying this year’s theme “Be the Inspiration” We are of course, all familiar with our story of the eradication of polio, but many of our stories are not common knowledge…but should be. I truly believe those same stories can and will have the ability to reinvigorate your Ro-tary spirit and accelerate the change to you, as they have me, and to make you a better person, a better Rotarian. Over the next year, I will con-vey to you some of those stories, I will be your Rotary storyteller. If you have a Rotary story, let me know, I’d like to include it.
Rotary’s success, its strength doesn’t come from individuals, but from the collective members of our clubs…and of the 1.2 million globally who pull together and do amazing… transformational things that others simply cannot. We INSPIRE, we ACT, we LEAD, we DO. We get the job done. We make the world a better place. That is also why membership, your membership is so critical.
With more inspired members, we can do so much more, to make the world a better place. Imagine what your club , what Rotary could do with just a few more members. We are currently bringing new members in the door, but we are not inspir-ing existing members to stay. So, Most of all, Be the Inspiration to our fellow members. Remind them of their importance to the good we are do-ing in the world…and let’s remind ourselves as well.
Looking forward to a great Rotary year with all of you,
